Why are grid girls needed?

All the drivers are guys, so it’s girls that hold their pit boards (on the starting grid). Why can’t it be guys who hold the pit boards instead? If all the drivers were women, would we still have grid girls? Or would it be grid guys?

1. grids are made so as to arrange the cars according to their qualifying positions At present there are 20 grids in every F1 race
2. If the drivers were all women then I would hope there would be grid guys, after all both sexes need some eye candy lol. Its the same as in all sport really, in boxing the person who holds the round number up is a pretty girl in not much clothing. Also if you go to the Max Power shows and the likes, there are always glamorous models lying all over the cars in skimpy outfits:)

4. I think its exploitation, its even worse in MOTO GP when top theree podium achievers spray their champange below their skirt!! hah! However on the other hand girls=Lucky charms

7. How is it exploitation? They are models! They are paid to look good and doing it at a GP is probably some of the easiest money they will ever make. I will never understand people who get offended by having grid girls. I doubt they would have men if there was a woman in F1 as they are for the crowd, who are mostly men, not the drivers.
8. what would you rather see holding the grid signs in front of you before a race 1.a pretty girl 2.a fat crew member with his belly hanging out (shiver) ill take whats behind sign number one bob thanks!

10. Obviously eye candy. Personally I couldn't care less. Those grid girls aren't very glamorous if you ask me. Beautiful women are integrated in the F1 world but they're much better as part of the crowds and especially well known stars walking the grids but "playmates" holding pit boards is somewhat stupid for what's supposed to be a sophisticated sport.
11. Like every other business, and F1 is definitely a business (just ask Bernie), they use sex to sell their product. Their audience is made up of primarily men and that's why we have grid girls. Sad, but that's the way it is.
